Having a special space for a child to sit when they want to calm down: keep a toy there, a ball to squeeze, a soft blanket… whatever you and your child feel is comforting. Over the past few weeks I adapted Five Little Ducks to incorporate their feelings and worked with PowToon to animate it. It's the first time I've used PowToon so there was plenty of experimenting going on! Today I want to share ideas around Nursery Rhymes - some Five Little Ducks Nursery Rhyme I've written about before, and others are brand new.

I created this cute piggy craft for International Mud Day, but it would work well with a piggy nursery rhyme too if you changed the words you put with it. Adults traced the circles for the body, head and snout, triangles for ears, and squares for legs, then the children cut them out.

The first two lines of this rhyme can be found in The Little Mother Goose, published in the US in 1912.Watch this song in the below video. They count down as ducks are removed, and return them when all the ducks come back! I made simple squirrels for this rhyme by using the template created by Melanie Fitz that was shared on the Storytime Stuff blog. Nursery rhymes are an example of story songs and they stay with us as they are passed from one generation to another. Okay, I'll admit it, I don't think this one is included in any of the Mother Goose Nursery Rhyme collections, but every child knows it and loves it, so I'm going to include it! Make or buy animal masks and re-enact rhymes such as Hey Diddle Diddle, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Old MacDonald, This Little Piggy, Little Bo Peep, Three Little Kittens. Then, she held hands with Emma and me and we walked her slowly over the ducks counting as she stepped on each new duck. Most Nursery Rhymes can be found online, but they will absorb more if they can hold a book-especially one with colorful illustrations. Examples are duck, duck, goose; the shoe game (hide their shoes around the house and have them find them), I spy, follow the leader, a birthday parade (using pots and pans from around the house), and rhyme time game. This classic Nursery rhyme book is a great book to read to children and show off it's vibrant illustrations.

The duck hand print is fairly self explanatory, and the construction paper ducks were very simple: I provided either adult or baby duck shapes, and the children tore construction paper scraps (strengthen those little fingers!) and glued them on. Don't forget to incorporate real animals when you can!
